Dürnstein, a village on the left bank of the Danube in Wachau, Austria. The monastic church at Dürnstein, now the parish church, was built in 1721-25. It has one of the finest Baroque towers in Austria. On the hill is the remains of a ruined castle in which King Richard I of England was held prisoner by Duke Leopold of Austria in 1193. The episode in which the minstrel Blondel is supposed to have discovered Richard is traditionally located at Dürnstein.
