The Aztec Ruins - Early settlers mistakenly surmised that people of the famous Aztec Empire in Mexico created these striking buildings. It was later determined that the builders were from ancestral Puebloan tribes. Archeologist Earl Morris began the first scientific excavation in 1916. About 400 room, rising to three stories in places enclosed a central plaza.
